Open Question: What do you believe about such mental powers?

Good day all!, I am interested in knowing other people's opinions on this topic so pardon me if by any chance you see the same question in other categories. As I searched for books mostly on self-help (trying to overcome fears I have, "reprogramming" negative thoughts etc.) I stumbled upon a book by Professor Herrou Aragon. I decided to search information on him, he's an occultist and seems to have studied for a great deal of his life psychology and para-psychological dealing as well. In his book he talks about the mental power of putting people under our command, making someone like or start feeling romantic sentiments toward us, and many other things. This really called my attention and I am now in search of other books similar to this one. What do you guys think? Could it be so that we have such mental faculties? In his book he states that Karma and beliefs like such are what holds us back from achieving anything, he has a very "cold" way of talking about mental power and employing it to command and dominate others, in other words...he basically implies that we have a power that can be used for anything but if we have limiting thoughts we won't achieve it. He gives different techniques of visualization, and instructions on how to carry out such "work" and influence feelings in others and it really calls my attention to think that such power is really within us, I've heard of people who deal with magic but not exactly with the employment of their mind only, it's new but interesting to my being so if you know of other books or authors or any historically known occultist please let me know, I'd like to go further into such ideas.
